To work in Russia, you need to get a Work Permit first. You have basically three kinds of work permits :

  • Standard Russian Work permit valid for the length of your contract. It is necessary to renew each year the visa if you are planning to work for more than a year.
  • VKS – Work permit for Highly Qualified Professionals : Valid for 3 years, the minimum salary should be equal to 2 million rubles per year
  • Work permits for CIS citizens

According to Rosstat (Federal State Statistic Service) in August 2020, the average salary in Russia was 52.1 thousand rubles in June of the same year, corresponding to an increase of 3,8% compared to last year for the same period.

Russia is a challenging place for work. The procedure to obtain work permits is not an easy task for foreign citizens.

However, there are different ways to work in Russia (Visa for Highly Qualified Specialists, Student visas which allow you to work while enrolled in an Exchange program since late 2020). The system is very diverse and complex.
